All Progressives Congress chieftain Farouk Aliyu has blamed the party’s defeat in the Osun governorship election on internal divisions and opposition to its candidate.
Aliyu said some aggrieved APC members refused to support Bola Oyebamiji because they were dissatisfied with his emergence as the party’s governorship candidate.
Speaking on ARISE Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Aliyu maintained that the APC did everything humanly possible to win the election but was undermined by internal wrangling.
“We did everything possible, humanly possible, to win the election,” he said.
Aliyu acknowledged that while some party members supported Oyebamiji, others withheld their support out of anger over his nomination.
According to him, the candidate controversy was the major internal problem that affected the APC’s performance at the polls.
The former lawmaker said the party must review its candidate-selection process and ensure that future candidates enjoy broader support among members.
Aliyu also commended the Federal Government over the conduct of the election, noting that predictions that the APC would simply write the results did not materialise.
He accepted the outcome of the election, saying Osun residents had chosen the Accord Party and their decision should be respected.
Governor Ademola Adeleke defeated Oyebamiji after polling 511,067 votes against the APC candidate’s 444,815 votes.
