An elderly man identified as Muhammad Bello has been hospitalised after being knocked down by a vehicle that fled the scene in Agbowa community, along the inward Itoikin Road in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The incident occurred at about 2:10 pm on Wednesday, leading to a distress call received by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
According to him, the agency’s LRT Lion Squad stationed in Agbowa was immediately deployed and arrived at the scene within 10 minutes.
“Upon arrival, responders found an elderly man identified as Muhammad Bello lying by the roadside after being knocked down by a vehicle which fled the scene immediately after the incident,” he said.
Oke-Osanyintolu said an initial assessment by LASEMA paramedics showed that Bello sustained serious injuries, including suspected fractures to both legs.
He added that the victim was subsequently transported to a hospital for definitive medical treatment.
The Permanent Secretary expressed sympathy to Bello and appealed to motorists to strictly observe traffic regulations, carry out routine maintenance checks on their vehicles and demonstrate responsibility and consideration towards other road users.
He also urged members of the public to promptly report emergencies through the 767 or 112 toll-free emergency lines to enable responders to intervene without delay.
