The African Union (AU) Commission has celebrated the government and people of Ethiopia on the occasion of the country’s New Year, extending warm greetings and best wishes to citizens across the East African nation.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, conveyed the organisation’s greetings in a message issued on Friday, September 11, 2026.
Youssouf reaffirmed the AU Commission’s solidarity with the people of Ethiopia while recognising the country’s historic contribution to Africa’s unity, independence and collective aspirations.
According to him, Ethiopia’s role in the continent’s history remains significant, particularly in advancing the ideals of African unity and cooperation.
The AU Commission Chairperson wished Ethiopians peace, unity and prosperity as they mark the beginning of another year.
He also renewed the African Union Commission’s commitment to promoting a united, peaceful and prosperous Africa driven by the aspirations of its people.
The message concluded with the traditional Ethiopian New Year greeting, “Melkam Addis Amet!”, meaning “Happy New Year.”
The Ethiopian New Year, known as Enkutatash, is celebrated annually and marks the beginning of a new year in the Ethiopian calendar.
The African Union is headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, making the country a central location in the continental organisation’s activities and institutions.
