Russian football expert Aleksandr Bubnov has admitted that Russia could struggle to defeat Nigeria if the Super Eagles field their strongest squad in next month’s international friendly.
Russia are scheduled to face the three time African champions on October 6 at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
However, Nigeria could be without some key players for the match due to injuries.
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and defender Zaidu Sanusi are doubtful for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea Bissau, as well as the friendly against Russia. Both players are still recovering from injuries suffered while playing for their clubs.
There are also concerns over the availability of Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele Bashiru and Marseille midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi, who are both recovering from injuries.
Russia are expected to play Iran, Namibia and Nigeria during their autumn international camp. Bubnov gave his thoughts on the three matches while speaking on the YouTube channel Komment.Show, according to Championat.
The former USSR international said Russia would have little chance of defeating Nigeria if the Super Eagles arrive with their best players.
“Against Nigeria, if they come to play with their main lineup, we won’t win,” Bubnov said.
He also expressed uncertainty about Namibia but suggested that Russia could have a difficult game against Iran if they use the same team that featured at the World Cup.
Nigeria and Russia last met in a friendly in Moscow in June 2025. The match ended 1-1.
Russia took the lead through a Semi Ajayi own goal before Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare equalised for Nigeria.
The October meeting will give both teams another opportunity to test their players ahead of future international competitions.
