The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, saying his administration has balanced Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity.
The bishops announced their support during the 2026 synod of the CBCN held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Speaking on behalf of the group, CBCN President-General, Leonard Kawas, said the conference initially had concerns over the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket adopted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 election.
Kawas, however, said Tinubu’s appointments after assuming office changed their perception of the administration.
He specifically mentioned the appointment of George Akume, a Christian, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, describing the decisions as evidence that the president had addressed concerns about religious balance.
“President Bola Tinubu came and balanced our diversity so very well. There is no iota of nepotism,” Kawas said.
He added that the president’s support for Christian candidates in some political appointments further strengthened their confidence in his leadership.
The CBCN leader said the group, which he claimed has members in 52 countries and 950 canonical bishops in Nigeria, would continue to support Tinubu through prayers and advocacy.
“We stand with the president today, and as long as he is willing to be our president and even come in 2027, we will still be standing with him,” he said.
The bishops’ endorsement comes ahead of the 2027 presidential election, where Tinubu is expected to seek a second term.
